Jeep Frames

Jeeps are some of the best off-road vehicles that can be found anywhere.

Jeeps have proved themselves in numerous wars and confrontations which has allowed them to become legendary for their four wheel drive performance. The initial surge in Jeep purchases were right after World War Two as returning GI’s wanted the same vehicle capabilities that they had during the war. They were, and still are, especially popular on farms in Indiana as well as the rugged mountains of Montana and deserts of Utah, but they can be found around the world.

All Jeeps begin their life based off of well built, sturdy jeep frames. They have evolved over the years from channel frames, box frames and tube frames to the modern “frameless” uni-body designs on the newest models. Custom and aftermarket frames are often purchased to improve the four wheeling capacity of the jeep. Older jeeps often need frame repairs and reinforcements to really handle tough terrain.

Custom jeeps could possibly be more prolific than standard production models, at least on the older models. Many jeep enthusiasts don’t believe it’s a jeep unless it has been customized. Lifted jeeps are common and jeep wheels are some of the first parts replaced. There are many styles and sizes to choose from but generally durability is the most important factor. Steel wheels and custom rims are preferred because of their strength, especially when forged as opposed to cast, and their affordability.

For jeep crawling, or rock crawling, there are many jeep parts that have to be replaced and upgraded. Everything from the suspension and transmission to the body has to be altered. Often the frame is a complete custom job with extra jeep roll bars to ensure the safety of the driver. Rolling a jeep while rock crawling is quite common.

For the more on-road jeep enthusiasts there are plenty of jeep accessories to keep the vehicle comfortable and stylish. Aftermarket sound systems can easily be installed with extra speakers attached to the roll bars and heated leather seats are always an option although they may not perform too well in the desert.

4x4 jeeps are some of the most versatile vehicles in existence. A hummer might be able to traverse tougher terrain right out of the box, but its going to cost a lot more than a customized jeep and needs enough fuel for a couple of jeeps. Jeeps can be continually maintained, customized, and upgraded until it is the jeep equivalent of a cyborg with only a few of the original parts but much more capable. It is a life-long hobby for many and a passion for some.

With the recent closure of Chrysler the future of jeeps is uncertain. It was one of the last productive cars that they manufactured and continues to be respected and loved by many jeep owners. Will they continue to be made to the highest standards of four wheel drives? Or will they be manufactured in a mysterious factory in China with low quality materials? Right now nobody is really sure.
